The world of herbalism is intriguing and encouraging to help combat everyday problems. Hair loss remains a mystery to most, but could a certain herb help combat this?

One study looked at the benefits of rosemary leaf extract for improving hair regrowth.

It was found the extract promoted hair growth in mice that had their back areas shaved.

Researchers suggested that the extract inhibits the “binding of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) to androgen receptors”.

A significant discovery as androgen receptors are proteins which allow hormones like testosterone and DHT to bind to them, thereby causing hair loss.

Rosemary leaf extract was deemed a “promising crude drug” for hair growth, researchers conclude.

For also improving both hair thickness and hair growth, rosemary oil might do the trick.

Considered a great choice because of its ability to improve cellular generation, rosemary oil is obtained from the flowering tops of the plant.

According to one study, rosemary oil performed as well as minoxidil, a common hair growth treatment.

It was also shown to do this but with less scalp itching as a side effect.

Other treatments for hair loss

The NHS lists a number of treatments for hair loss – most aren’t available on the NHS.

Finasteride and minoxidil are the main treatments for male pattern baldness.

The health body advises: “Minoxidil can also be used to treat female pattern baldness. Women shouldn’t use finasteride.

“These treatments don’t work for everyone, only work for as long as they’re used, aren’t available on the NHS, and can be expensive.”
